Rožňava is proud of its well-preserved square market place, said to be the largest square of its kind in Central Europe. In the middle stands the Renaissance watchtower, built as a defence against the Turks, with a view over the town.

Just off the square is the Church of the Assumption. One of our guests wrote that nowhere else in Slovakia had he seen original interior decoration so beautifully preserved. The town has five churches in all and a plague column, and for a longer walk there is the Calvary, about a kilometre from the guesthouse.

Tips from Zlatka

  • In February the town holds Rožňava Days, with events around town.

  • At weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) there is live music in various restaurants around town.

  • If you are with us in early January, the traditional climb up Volovec takes place on the first Saturday of the year.
